The beauty and tranquillity of Agulhas National Park, captured on the cover of Wild’s summer issue, has been reduced to ashes. On Christmas Day 2009 fire swept through the park and more than half of it was engulfed by flame.

Traditional homesteads and cottages, which had recently been renovated for use as accommodation, were gutted. Vast stretches of fynbos were destroyed and in the massive seeding that usually follows fire there’s the risk that alien plants may take over.

Agulhas National Park needs your help to get back on track, for the sake of the environment and the people who live there. The Honorary Rangers of the Overberg region have a plan – and the enthusiasm and energy to put it into action.

They want to ensure fire doesn’t destroy the park again, so firefighting equipment is high on the list. As are the tools needed for fencing to keep looters out. And they want to clear alien vegetation to safeguard fynbos for the future and replace the lost tourism and hospitality jobs.

Antonia is going on Friday to do an official inspection.  I am going with.  She is particularly sad about those stables as they were untouched - exactly like they had always been with the original timber construction techniques preserved.  The restored main house was saved because it had a sprinkler system installed as part of the renovations.

SAHRA - South African Heritage Resources Agency - have been pretty pathetic (only this week was anyone significant there since the fire).  Antonia & her mates have had to stop SanParks (Cape nature?) from clearing the mess up as that will mean the surviving original material etc is all lost.  It must stay where it is so the 'experts' can rescue & preserve what remains.
