A local pilot, Mr Glen Brown, who regularly flies along the Plettenberg Bay coastline, has noticed three large great white sharks patrolling close to shore during the past few weeks.

The NSRI has also issued a warning to bathers, and especially surfers, to exercise extreme caution due to a noticeable increase in great white shark activity along the Southern Cape coast.

Brown spotted a four metre long great white underneath a group of surfers at Lookout Beach. He made attempts, using his helicopter at low level, to warn the surfers of the presence of the shark. "They didn’t seem to have any idea of the presence of the shark and continued to surf," he says. A few years ago Brown spotted another fast moving great white approaching a group of surfers. "I dropped my Robertson 44 helicopter in between the surfers and the shark at a moment when the shark was only metres from them," says the concerned pilot who is always prepared to warn surfers and bathers if and when he spots sharks too close to them during his normal flying operations.

Encounters between shark and human are not uncommon along the coast from Plettenberg Bay to Mossel Bay. The last confirmed shark biting incident in the Plettenberg Bay area was on 16 May 1998 when a local, Mr Neil Stevenson, survived the attack.

Two great white sharks, swimming in the ocean, spied a ship in distress.

"Follow me, son," the father shark said to the son shark and they swam to the ship. "First we swim around them a few times with just the tip of our fins showing."

And they did.

"Well done, son! Now we swim around them a few times with all of our fins showing."

And they did.

"Now we eat everybody."

And they did.

When they were both gorged, the son asked, "Dad, why didn't we just eat them all at first? Why did we swim around and around them?" His wise father replied, "Because they taste better without  the sh¡t inside!"

GARDEN ROUTE NEWS - The NSRI and 'Save Our Seas Foundation' has issued an urgent warning to all swimmers and surfers to be extra careful whilst in the sea.

According to the NSRI, it is around this time of year that sharks begin to migrate towards the shoreline in search of food.

Garden Route residents have a unique opportunity to learn more about sharks during an illustrated talk by Enrico Gennari tommorow.

Gennari is a renowned marine researcher of the Mossel Bay Marine Laboratory and he will be sharing his experiences and knowledge of white sharks during this interesting event.

The talk - organised by WESSA's George/Sedgefield branch - will take place at the George Museum tomrrow at 10:00.

Cool

Smile
