Are the eggs still ok to eat when there's a red tide?

Gewoonlik in pare of klein swerms.

A friend of mine (Afrikaans speaking) wants to know why the Oystercatcher is called a Tobie in Afrikaans.

Good question. I have no idea. No clues in my bird guide either. Scratch

Only GUESS I could venture would be that it was derived from the latin name for the genus.  "Haematopus"   as "Tobie" is also the collective afrikaans name for the whole genus.

topus = tobie?   its a stretch I know.  Smile

African oystercatcher - Swart Tobie - Haematopus moquini
Eurasian Oystercatcher - Bont Tobie -Haematopus ostralegus

Sover ek weet is daar slegs iets soos 3000 volwasse swart tobies oor.
